Tuesday 7th July - Luang Prabang

The heavy rain really brought out the frogs last night David tells me.  I slept through it all.  Another day of travelling.  Leaving the capital and heading into the interior of Laos though still along the Mekong River.

Watay Airport in Vientiane is a real dump but fortunately we only had a short time there.  30 minute flight on Laos Airlines to Luang Prabang.  The old town centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Luang Prabang is much smaller than Vientiane (only 70,00 inhabitants) and is much more laid back.  There are no traffic lights.  Much more of a tourist destination than Vientiane.  The other big difference is there are a LOT more bugs.

The hotel is great:

About 15 minutes walk to the centre but you can borrow bikes for free from the hotel.

Cycled into town to - you guessed it - eat something.  Chose a restaurant at random and it was great.

Went to the Royal Palace Museum but it was closed for the day.  Lao people need to work on their hospitality skills.

After that walked around town then up the 352 stairs to the top of the town where we were told you should watch the sunset.  It was very cloudy when we got there so didn't bother.

After a circuit round the night market went to the hawker food market.  The food wasn't bad (and it was very cheap) but we just can't do that whole backpacking thing any more. (actually we never could! D)

Back to the hotel for cocktails!
